FINDINGS

What I found interesting from this research is that despite the mobility of social media we still feel most comfortable using it from home. I myself use social media at all times of the day though and almost expected the same from others, though as a communications student I guess that I should have realised the greater interest and importance that it plays in my everyday life compared to that of others and should not have made such biased assumptions.

If we compare the results to the figures from the research conducted by Sensis (2015) outlined that the most common places to use social media was in the lounge/living room or in the bedroom and that has definitely been confirmed by this collaborative ethnographic research. Delving further than simply where we use social media, we have established the reason that we like to use social media in these places is because, whether it is to keep up-to-date, scrolling through a newsfeed or conversing with friends, using social media is seen as a time to relax and is an activity we do in our down time whether that is first thing in the morning with a cup of tea or from the comfort of our bed before we head to sleep.

Those of younger age demographics, including myself, like to use mobile phones to view their social media as it reflects the fact that we do use it to communicate with people throughout the day and continue those communications as we move throughout the house. While Jenny and Steve, both 51, prefer a larger device (tablet, laptop or desktop computer) to view social media as it is used less frequently and for a set period of time in the day.

From the secondary research we established a couple of things about how and where we use social media, such as that we commonly use mobile devices, that Facebook is the most popular, it is part of our everyday lives and that we tend to check it of a morning when we wake up and just before we go to bed. All of this was confirmed by my research though what it didn't tell us was the 'why'. Why is it this way? I believe the why has started to be answered and is something that we all might have suspected. Social media is a distraction and often a fairly mindless activity so we use it in our down time. But it is also a way to keep up-to-date and feel connected to the outside world and that is what drives us to participate in it on an everyday basis.
