COLLABORATIVE SAMPLES

Lachlan, 14

Lachlan is a high school student and a very typical one at that. He has a large number of social media accounts though some he states he only got because everyone else had them. Lachlan mostly uses social networking platforms to keep up to date with his friends, constantly messaging each other back and forth. Therefore he doesn't find himself using them when he is at school. He does use it regularly while at home. His favourite and most frequent place to use social media is from the comfort of his bed with the use of his smartphone. Lachlan does not recall using social media that often while out of the house unless he is waiting somewhere bored or has recieved a message. Lachlan's primary use for social media is that as a tool for communication and for that reason it has dictated the time and place that he uses it especially when it comes to using it for long durations of time (only at home).

Jenny, 51

Jenny has only two social media accounts; Facebook and LinkedIn. She uses LinkedIn for professional purposes such as job hunting, networking and for keeping up to date with her industry. Facebook, in her eyes, is for keeping up-to-date with friends. When asked to recall the last time she was on social media, Jenny recounted sitting on the couch scrolling through her Facebook newsfeed while enjoying breakfast and in this context she finds it easiest to access on her ipad. This is an almost daily routine either in the morning with breakfast or in the afternoon with a cup of tea and is her downtime, a time to relax and a time to partake in mindless activities such as scrolling through a social media site. Social media is not something she checks daily and this is reflected in the place in which she finds herself most commonly using the platforms.

Steve, 51

Steve isn't a massive user of social media, with only an account on the obviously popular social networking platform; Facebook. Steve does though find himself using it regularly. The most common place he finds himself using social media is at work. Though only in his breaks he adds, browsing the site as a bit of a break from paperwork and to keep up-to-date with friends mostly. Steve spends longer blocks of time on the social media platform then users like Lachlan who would check it consistently throughout the day. Instead he will access it less regularly but for longer periods of time. He also recalls using the site again at night, though still while doing work on his computer. Steve only acceses social media on his computer either at work or in the home.

Liam, 18

Liam much like Lachlan largely uses his social media accounts to communicate with friends and has it connected through his mobile phone so as to always have access. Liam uses social media on average a couple of hours each day but describes his use as sporadic, checkying it constantly throughout the day rather then in one sitting. He is ussally at home when he does use social media for a longer period of time, recalling the last instance as when he was feeling relaxed sitting on the couch, on his mobile phone. It is when he is in bed though that he tends to use his laptop to use social media. This is due the the fact, that his laptop is always in his room and does not transfer it to other locations often. It will often also depend on the reasoning as to why he is checking social media as to whether or not he will choose to use either his phone or laptop. Liam does find himself using social media on his phone will in public spaces also. This is usually when he finds himself in a situation which he describes as boring and uses social media as a distraction in these instances.
